If you enjoyed the movie The Good Son you will enjoy Wishing Makes It So by Marilyn Meredith.

Life has been hard for little four year old Belinda Sleigh.  As she watches her stepfather drinking and shooting up drugs, she makes a terrible wish which results in his death. This begins a time when Belinda is shifted from foster home to foster home, always having to be moved because of her behavior. People have been seriously hurt, even fatally, in the homes in which she’s already stayed. But none of this is told to Steven and Alyse Chrestman who have come forward to adopt little Belinda.

Steven and Alyse have three natural children: Andrew, who is the oldest, Holly and Pammy, the youngest. Their home life is built upon love: their love for one another and for God.

Steven, as a social worker, and Alyse, as a degreed, pre-school educator, both with so much love in their hearts, have high hopes that they will be able to conquer any problems that can arise with Belinda. However, from the first day, Alyse sees in Belinda’s manipulative behavior aspects that cause her to doubt.

Writing a story portraying a child as the villain is a risky endeavor because readers don’t want children or animals hurt. Writing a story in which a four-year-old child is developed mentally enough to perform as Belinda does is even riskier. Add a touch of spice so that Wishing Makes It So and all the horrible events happen naturally.

Manipulation is one of the tools a normal child uses against his parents. A normal child will occasionally play one parent against the other in order to have what he/she desires. Belinda does this same thing, but with a vengeance. Read how her story unfolds. You will hurt for little Belinda, but you will find yourself hurting more for the family who loves her so much.

Marilyn Meredith has been successful in creating a child character that readers will turn page after page of the novel in order to learn what happens next to that child as well as what will that beautiful little four-year-old do next. It's a book you can't put down once you start reading.

I liked Wishing Makes It So because the book reads fast, no glitches to slow you down, and the reader can get lost in it. It’s full of suspense, another one of my favorite story elements.
