Belinda Lawrence receives a letter from her Aunt Jane who lives in Milford. Aunt Jane has something to show her and requests she come as soon as she can. When Belinda arrives on her aunt’s doorstep, she finds her aunt dead at the bottom of the stairs.

As time passes, Belinda’s new home is ransacked upstairs and downstairs. She becomes convinced her new friends Jacob and Rosemary, a brother and sister who are her neighbors, know more than what they are telling her. Old Mr. Munro, her aunt’s lawyer, is also hiding something. Soon, Belinda meets a real estate salesman who seems to have an obsession in acquiring her aunt’s cottage. Everyone becomes suspect as Belinda tries to get people to tell her what they are hiding and as she hunts for and examines the clues that increase in number as the days go by.  Interaction between her and Jacob and her and Mark, the real estate salesman, increase in intensity as well as suspicion as each reveals just how much he desires the property and cottage she has inherited from her aunt. A second murder raises the stakes and Belinda finds herself staring into the eyes of the killer.

Belinda Lawrence is a woman who is highly charged when it comes to solving a mystery. She lets nothing stand in her way right down to entering other people’s home without invitation. I like her independent nature, her daring maneuvers, her determination. Mr. Kavanagh did a great job choosing characters that supported and/or worked against Belinda. A good read filled with suspense and mystery.
Capable of Murder is the first book in Brian Kavanagh’s Belinda Lawrence Cozy Mysteries series. The second book is already on the market; its called The Embroidered Corpse. A third book is in the making.
