If you’re freezing in the north try a vacation in the San Joaquin Valley where the heat sends passion to its boiling point and murder solves the problem. Temporarily, that is.
While vacationing, one likes to try out the cuisine of the place that is being visited. For an appetizer try Murderous Martini, a short four-line poem written by Jo Anne Lucas which sets the mood for the hodgepodge of mysteries that follows. All short and to the point, the section called Fine Dining ;er, Dieing; serves up A Tale of Two Sittings by Sunny Frazier where a rendezvous that ends in murder takes place in a secluded cubicle in the back of a restaurant. Jo Anne Lucas shows how an office party can end up in A Feast for Fools. Out of the Frying Pan by Sunny Frazier and Motive, Means and Ooops! by Jo Anne Lucas are the final two stories of this section and we tremble in our shoes as Innocence walks off into the sunset with the killer.
From dining we’re led into other areas of the Valley where passions run hot along with the temperature. In this section, Cora Ramos makes her debut with Too Hot to Handle which is the first of six stories revealing how hot temps can lead to blazing passions in the section entitled Valley Heat. When stopping at a diner for a can of beer to cool the parched throat, beware of the two men sitting at the other table. Sunny Frazier and Jo Anne Lucas dazzles us again with other shorts such as Killer Tan by Lucas; careful with the tanning lotion, you hear; and Too Hot for Hanging by Frazier-- Is there ever a perfect crime?
Frazier, Lucas, and Ramos have whetted our appetites for adventure in the Valley so we move eagerly into the rest of the book. Murder happens. That’s a fact of life. This book shows us various forms of murder in various settings-- whether it’s poison or a knife in Stormy Weather or a baseball bat or flywheels and gears of a nineteenth century German clock in a carillon tower in Deadly Destinations, we eat up the offerings of these authors and perhaps think of our own ‘murderous plans.’ Culture plays a part in many murders; Culture and Consequences; as any avid mystery reader can tell you, and holidays are no exception; Holidays Can Be Murder;.
Valley Fever is truly a good smorgasbord of good ‘reading’ and a book that leaves you wanting more. I tried to reach Lucas and Ramos, but failed to get in touch with them. However, Sunny Frazier is my kind of writer. Her stories included in this anthology are humorous in spite of the deadly seriousness of the topic-Murder. Her titles can be said to be well-known, for instance, check these out-Fiesta de los Muertos, True Confections, Syonara Mr. Chips, A Tale of Two Sittings, Final Forecast, Shudder Bug, Tunnel Vision, Arrest in Peace, Hickory Dickory, Out of the Frying Pan, Too Hot for Hanging, and The Case of the Clay Pigeon-- in memory of Holmes? Many of these stories have won so many awards that space prohibits a detailed listing, but here are a few. Eight of the stories written by Sunny Frazier have won two or more: 1st place in contests for Murderous Intent Mag, Coveted Dead Bird Award, Futures Mystery Anthology Mag, San Luis Obispo Nightwriters, Writers’ Digest, Writers Read, Writers International Network. Only a few books remain. Visit Sunny Frazier at <http://www.sunnyfrazier.com> and learn about her latest Christy Bristol Mysteries, Fools Rush In, and other anthologies her stories appear in. Sunny worked with an undercover narcotics team at the Fresno County Sheriff's Department for many years. Her vast knowledge of police procedures and her experiences make her stories come alive for the reader. One of her hobbies is creating personal horoscopes for family and friends which she has done for 35 years. If you want a horoscope, created in the old-fashioned way, contact her through her site above.
In conclusion, GONE COASTAL is coming out soon with two of her award-winning stories included, as well as NEVER SAFE, a second anthology with two more stories. She says, "Now that my attention is focused on the series, I'll be doing fewer short stories. I'm very proud that my material was included in these anthology collections."
